Sharks belong to the group of elasmobranch fish classified by the cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head. Modern Sharks are categorized within the Clade Selachimorpha and are the sister group to the rays. The sharks are the known from the back 420 million years ago.
The sharks are diversified into over 500 species. They have the range from small size, the dwarf lanternshark which is species of deep water to largest fish in the world, whale shark which length reaches up to 12 meters. Sharks are found in all seas and it is common at the depth of 2,000 meters.
What is Shark Fish
Most of the peoples think that a shark is swimming animal with big fins and pointy teeth. But the truth is there are more than 500 species of the shark found in the seas or ocean. The sharks are generally not live in the freshwater except river shark and bull shark which can easily survive in the freshwater and seawater.
The sharks are able to swim forward. Many sharks have to keep swimming in the regular breath. There are some pieces of evidence that sharks are evolved before the age of dinosaurs. The sharks have the identity of being dangerous which is almost not true.

What does Shark look like?
The shark fish skeleton is very different from the other bony fish and terrestrial vertebrates. Sharks and other cartilaginous fish have skeletons made of cartilage and connective tissue. Cartilage is durable and flexible and about half the normal density of bone. This reduces the skeleton’s weight and helps in saving energy.
Because the sharks do not have rib cages which cause they can easily be crushed under their own weight on land. The sharks have the jaws similar to the rays and skates and not attached to the cranium. The jaw’s surface needs extra support due to its heavy exposure to the physical stress and it also needs for strength.
The fins are elongated and supported with the unsegmented rays known as the ceratotrichia, filaments of elastic protein resembling the horny keratin in hair and feathers. Most of the sharks have the total eight fins.
The sharks have a complex dermal corset made of flexible collagenous fibers and arranged as a helical network surrounding their body. This is work as an outer skeleton that provides attachment for their swimming muscles and thus saving energy.
|There are hundreds of Shark species in the world. The most common Species of sharks are mentioned below.|
On average, a shark attacks and kill 10 humans per year while humans are killing 20-30 million sharks annually as per the report of Florida Museum of Natural History’s Department of Ichthyology. Not all species of sharks attacks on the humans as there are only about 10 species that actually attacks the humans.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explained it that sharks don’t hunt the humans usually. But if they attack the human then it will be just mistaken identity. Sometimes sharks will investigate the food items by taking a taste. The sharks have the row of the teeth due to a single bite of the shark can lead to bleed individual until death.
Shark Life Span
It is the difficult task to track the sharks due to they are migratory and have the different feeding patterns. Recently, the GPS technology is introduced by which it becomes easy to track the sharks in the deep sea as well. Shark has the lifespan that varies by species as most of them live up to 20 to 30 years in the wild, there are some species that live longer than others. The whale shark can live up to 100 years.
The Great White Sharks is around 30 years but other research indicates that they can reach up to 40 years. The lifespan of Tiger Sharks can live up 27 years in the wild although some of them can live up to 50 years. The Hammerhead sharks have a typical lifespan from 20 to 30 years approximately.
All sharks are carnivores and they live feed other animals as opposed to vegetation. Most of the sharks live on the flesh while some species of sharks prefer to eat carrion. It made up of the remains of fish and other marine animals that have already died.
Sharks use their sharp teeth that just wait to tear up their prey. This can be true in the large and aggressive sharks. The whale shark feeds on plankton and small bony fish. For the reason, its teeth are largely undeveloped.
Shark Fish Size
The biggest shark is the whale shark which length can be up to 46 feet while there is also the smaller size of sharks also which length hardly reach 7-8 inches long, named Spined Pygmy shark.
Some species have the intermediate of 5-7 feet which is equal to the human beings. The species mostly found in the deep blue sea at the depth of 2000 m. Not all sharks are harmful to the humans.
Are Sharks Mammals or Fish?
Sharks are fish, not mammals. Mammals are a large group of diverse animals that have the certain characteristics in common. One of these characteristics is those female mammals can produce milk for their young ones. But shark doesn’t produce the milk. So, they are not mammals.
Mammals are warm-blooded and able to regulate the temperature of its own body. While sharks are cold-blooded and highly dependent on the external conditions. The sharks belong to the fish because they have the skeleton that is entirely composed of cartilage and is equipped with tough, leathery and scaleless skin.
Sharks are easily adapted to the new conditions and environments that is the main reason they survived for a long time. The habitat of the shark depends on the species of the shark. Sharks are cold blooded and hard to find in the cold temperatures water.
However, this is not true as there are sharks living in warm, temperature, and cold waters. The sharks are preferred to live in the deep water. Sharks have very few enemies that are able to move freely in the water as they desire. They are loners and mostly travels alone.
The sharks are K-selected reproducers that mean they produce a small number of well developed young as opposed to a large number of poorly developed young. Sharks range from 2 to 100 young per reproductive cycle. Sharks mature slowly relative to much other fish. Lemon sharks reach sexual maturity at age around 13-15 years. The sharks practice internal fertilization. Mating is the rarely observed in the sharks. The most of the female species have the bite marks on their skin due to courtship behavior.
Unlike the other bony fish, the shark’s eggs are fertilized inside the female’s body. Most sharks give birth to the live young, but some release eggs that hatch later. The gestation period can be up to almost two years long. Baby sharks are born with the full set of teeth. They are able to take care of themselves after hatch. They are quick in swimming and easily escape from their mothers who might eat them.
There are almost only 10 species that can harm the humans while humans are fishing millions of sharks every year. The most of the species of sharks found in the deep water about 2,000 meters. There are more than 500 species of sharks. If you want to know more about the Shark Fish then explore this site to gain more knowledge.
