Swordtail Fish is one of the popular and spread tank fish. The fish have a peaceful nature which can inhabit in a common tank. This is a freshwater/brackish fish from the family Poeciliidae of order Cyprinodontiformes.
It is native to North and Central America ranging Veracruz, Mexico, to northwestern Honduras. The male and female from this species are easy to differentiate due to discontiguous characteristics. The fish may have ecological damage due to the rapidly increasing of this species.
What is Swordtail Fish
The species swordtail related to the Poeciliidae family. The fish scientifically known as the Xiphophorus helleri that taken from the Green words ‘xiphos’ – a sword, ‘phoros’ – to carry. Helleri was added to on the name of German natural philosopher (Karl Bartholma us Heller), who was the first person to catch the fish in Mexican lakes and succeed to bring it to Europe.
The fish was firstly described by Doctor Johan Hekel, a laboratory assistant at the museum of natural history in Vienna under Imperial Natural History Museum.

The length of the swordtail grows up to a maximum length of 14 cm while the female able to reach up to 16 cm. The fish name was taken from the elongated lower lobe of the male’s tailfin or caudal fin. The female is usually growing larger than the male in the length. Swordtail fish species are able to breed at the age of 5-6 months. There is one male necessary with the three males for breeding in the tank. The fish give birth to the live, young juveniles instead of eggs. The male fish fertilize the eggs inside the female’s body which she carries until ready to spawn.
It takes a period up to 28-30 days. The female fish can even breed without the male because these are able to store the male milt inside her for fertilize the eggs herself.

This is a tropical water fish that can endure different water parameters. The fish is considered as a hardy fish which fine in the temperate of water between 65-82 degrees Fahrenheit. These fish species are rapidly accepted the new environment but you need to prevent sudden drops in the temperature as it may harmful for the fish and can affect the immune system of fish as well. The water the in the tank should have 12-30 dGH hardness with a pH level of 7.0-8.4. Alkaline, hard water is moderately suitable for these fish species.
